The Doomed Wife of Archduke Franz Ferdinand? Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg
Today we dive into the life of Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg. A woman who stood behind an historical figure and who accidentally today is best remembered for one of history’s most pivotal moments. Coming from a noble background Sophie married the heir to the austro hungarian throne - a man who actually was way above her rank but who chose love over political alliances. As shocking as her marriage to Archduke Franz Ferdinand was, so was also her demise by his side in Sarajevo.

Queen Victoria's Mother
Просмотров 983День назад
Queen Victoria rings a bell for most people. She was the Queen who reigned through most of the 19th century and who managed to make powerful marriages for her children and grandchildren. As such she gained herself the nickname “grandmother of Europe” and up to this day, most European royals descend from her. It comes to no surprise that the Queen therefore outshined most people around her. One ...
5 Longest-Lived Titanic Survivors

On the night of April 14th 1912 the RMS Titanic struck an iceberg while on her maiden voyage to New York. At that time the liner was the largest in service and carried 2224 people on board. It would take only 2 hours and 40 minutes for the ship to completely vanish into the ice cold sea. Due to the lack of lifeboats on the Titanic roughly 1500 people did not survive that night. This makes the s...

The announcement made on live television came as a surprise for the Danish people and the world. Initially Margrethe II never intended to abdicate the throne. There were two Bowes- Lyon siblings the other three were their first cousins. Nerissa and Katherine were the children of Lieutenant The Hon. John Bowes-Lyon (1886 - 1930) AND (m. 1914) The Hon. Fenella Hepburn- Stuart-Forbes-Trefusis (1889 - 1966) The daughter of the 21st Baron Clinton. *John and Fenella had* *5 children.* Sadly, Fenella's only sibling, Harriet, had 3 of her 7 children with the same conditions as Nerissa and Katherine Bowes-Lyon. Those siblings also lived in Eastwood Hospital

The great tragedy was that Karl I was keen to modernise the monarchy and empire (the latter into a sort of commonwealth of semi-independent states which would all have gained full independence over time anyway) - and would have if he had ever had the chance. Instead, he came to the Throne in the middle of a crazy war which he personally detested and tried to end. By the time it was over, the Austrians seemed to have lost faith in the institution which - as noted earlier - was fossilised, out of place in the 20th century and in need of major reform.

  • @marksmale827

When George V and Queen Mary were on a state visit to Vienna before WWI, even the ultraconservative Queen Mary was amazed at how archaic the Austrian court still was in the early 20th century.

Some notes from Germany. The name of the hotel , where Empress Sissi died, is either ,Belle Rivage',,Bon Rivage' or ,Beau Rivage'.In late 1980s ( between 1987 and 1989), a german politician named Uwe (?) Barschel , who was involved in a political scandal similar to Watergate, died in the same hotel under mysterious circumstances. And Upper Class Ladies of Austria - Hungary had been shocked, and austrian gunmakers tried to invent small pistols for ladies.

I had the umeasurably honour of having had the opportunity to be member of a delegation of an Austrian monarchist organisation granted an audience with Empress Zita in the mid 1980s in her then residence of Zizers in Switzerland. While already quite old, it was impressive how she addressed each member of the delegation with some personal remark. My thanks go out to the person organising this, Dr. Karl von Portele and all the members of "Lutetia Parisiorum". I also had the opportunity to attend her funeral as a "Chargierter" of my University Fraternity KÖHV Pannonia. We got soaked in the rain while having to stand outside St. Stephen's in Vienna due to space constraints inside, but it was worth being part of such a historic event.

Not the mayor of Corfu but la Mairie de Corfu, the municipality of the island is the God parent and the municipality is an institution that doesn't extinct. It wasn't rare at that time when the army or a municipality could become the God father represented by an army high rank officer or the mayor. As for his other godmother, the grandmother Queen Olga of Greece, she did not travel but she was represented by her granddaughter Princess Olga, Philip's first cousin, sister of Princess Marina of Kent, granddaughter of the Czar Alexander II, and daughter of prince Nicolas of Greece and the grand duchess Helena Vladimirovna) .

A saint? A saint wouldn't have cared for an earthly crown and earthly glory. He put the lives of countless men in danger so he could get his crown back. His wife became hysterical when she thought her husband was about to abdicate. He and his wife loved their crowns and their golden palaces, that is a fact. They may be devout Christians but earthly glory still mattered a lot to them. Karl was driven to an early grave by his own ambitions. He could have lived a quiet life in Switzerland but he loved the throne too much. Even Wilhelm 2 thought Karl went too far.
